Diagnostic Summary
Select the symptoms above and run the diagnostic.
Important: Hydraulic cylinder symptoms can be misleading. Drift, weak force, slow movement, and failure to extend or retract can come from pumps, valves, hoses, controls, fluid condition, linkage, or other hydraulic-system components as well as the cylinder itself.
Common Hydraulic Cylinder Problems
Common cylinder-related faults include worn rod and piston seals, rod scoring or pitting, bent rods, damaged chrome, worn glands or bearings, internal bypass, bore scoring, damaged mounts, contamination, and misalignment. Repeated seal failures are especially important because they often indicate an underlying condition that was not corrected during the previous repair.
External Leak vs. Internal Bypass
An external leak is visible outside the cylinder, often around the rod, gland, ports, end cap, or barrel connection. Internal bypass can allow oil to move past the piston seals without an obvious external leak, causing drift or loss of force.
See the detailed hydraulic cylinder leaking guide for more information about leak locations and possible causes.
When the Problem May Not Be the Cylinder
If multiple hydraulic functions are weak or slow, the issue may involve the pump, relief valve, fluid supply, control valves, filters, hoses, or other shared components. Cylinder drift can also be caused by valve leakage. Troubleshooting should consider the complete circuit rather than automatically rebuilding the cylinder.
What to Send With a Repair Request
- Equipment make and model
- Cylinder function
- Cylinder manufacturer and part number if available
- Primary symptom and when it occurs
- Photos of the complete cylinder
- Close-up photos of leaks, rod damage, mounts, and ports
- Whether the cylinder is already removed
- Any previous repair history
You can document dimensions and identification details with the hydraulic cylinder measurement and spec sheet tool, or estimate likely repair complexity with the repair cost estimator.
